In this interview of Juan Castano, Managing Director of Calpulli Mexican Dance Company, he discusses the special programming featured in the upcoming Schimmel Center performance. Grounding itself in the rituals and celebrations surrounding the Day of the Dead, the show features a variety of choreography from various heritages.

The Calpulli Mexican Dance Company will be having two performances at the Schimmel Center this Sunday, December 9. Tickets are still available for both events on our website.

This Saturday, December 8, the Schimmel Center will be hosting Tony Award Winner Debbie Gravitte  as she performs holiday songs and sing-a-longs to ring in the 2012 holiday season. Known for her work on Jerome Robbins’  Broadway, Gravitte will be joined by The Russ Kassoff Orchestra and will feature some very special guests, including Marc Shaiman (Hairspray and TV’s Smash), Norm Lewis (Porgy and Bess) as well as The Broadway By The Year Chorus.

Although Hurricane Sandy put quite a damper on our plans, we are excited to be hosting the magnificent Calpulli Mexican Dance Company on the reschedule date of December 9th. With its beautiful imagery, Calpulli is sure to astound when they unveil Dia de Los Muertos, inspired by the holiday of the same name on our stage in a matter of weeks. In order to get properly introduced to the company, be sure to watch the above video, featuring footage of the company preparing for their two upcoming performances.

Due to Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, The Schimmel Center cancelled both the Banjo Summit featuring Bela Fleck and the two performances from Calpulli Mexican Dance Company. Fortunately, we would like to announce the rescheduling of both events at this time.

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company will be hosting two performances on Sunday, December 9th at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. while  The Banjo Summit featuring Bela Fleck will be taking place on Sunday, January 20th at 7:30 p.m. Ticketholders for the original performances will be able to either exchange their tickets for the rescheduled performances or request a refund by contacting the box office of The Schimmel Center for the Arts.

The box office is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and can be reached via phone at 212.346.1715.

There’s no better summit than a banjo summit, especially when brought to you by some of the most influential bluegrass banjo players all with ties to New York City. On Sunday, October 28, The Schimmel Center is proud to host Banjo Summit: A Gathering of 5-String Masters, featuring multi-Grammy Award winner Béla Fleck. Being backed by an acoustic band, Fleck and six other masters will be playing a range of selections, stemming back from classic examples of bluegrass and country to even newer age concepts, like jazz, classical and rock.

Fleck will be joined by masters such as Tony Trischka, Bill Keith, Richie Stearns, Eric Weissberg, Pete Wernick and Noam Pikelny.
