Justin Townes Earle

Songwriter Justin Townes Earle will celebrate the impact of famed artist Woody Guthrie for two nights on the Schimmel Stage. A powerful musician in his own right, recently winning the “Song of the Year” award at the Americana Music Awards in 2011, Earle will be playing his original songs in the context of Guthrie, the folk musician who has inspired the liked of Springsteen, Dylan and Mellencamp  and is well known as one of the forefathers of folk. Earle will be joined by special guests during this two-night run, including John McCauley of Deer Tick, The Low Anthem, Joe Pug and Joe Klein, best-selling author of “Woody Guthrie: A Life,” and “Primary Colors.”

A venerable folk musician in his own right, Earle’s 2012 album, Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now, is a true testament to his artistry and is available to stream via Spotify. Join us to experience what will be two great nights for Americana folk. But hey, instead of taking our word for it, you should listen to each artist! American Showstoppers

Who doesn’t love a great show tune? The Schimmel Center is proud to host arranger and producer Fred Barton’s taste of American Broadway in the form of American Showstoppers: An Evening with Harold Arlen. As a composer and respected contributor to the Great American Songbook, Arlen is known for his work on The Wizard of Oz, including the iconic “Over The Rainbow”, among many other fantastic songs and tunes. Barton will be bringing Arlen’s work to life with the help of a full 12-piece orchestra and many friends, all known as stars on the Broadway stage.

Among the guests accompanying Barton includes: Vivian Reed (2-time Tony nominee, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Marie Christine); Luba Mason (Chicago, Jekyll & Hyde, Capeman, How To Succeed); Anastasia Barzee (City Of Angels, Miss Saigon, Jekyll & Hyde); Ryan Silverman (Phantom of The Opera, Rebecca, Cry-Baby); Tari Kelly (Anything Goes, The Boy from Oz, Show Boat); Damon Kirsche (Encores’ Ziegfeld Follies Of 1936, On A Clear Day); and N’Kenge (Motown, Sondheim On Sondheim).

Zakir Hussain and Rakesh Chaurasia

A celebrated artist and a true gift to the world of percussion, we are excited to be hosting Zakir Hussain this Saturday, October 13. A New York debut, Hussain’s mastery of the Hindustani repertoire of ragas and previous diverse collaborations (including Shakti and Planet Drum) will be sure to cement an awe-inspiring show of true musicianship. Joining Hussain will be notable bansuri flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, guaranteeing a night of beautiful classical music.

Photo Gallery: Fatoumata Diawara

Fatoumata Diawara graced the Schimmel Center stage this past Friday, September 28, and blew away all expectations with her wondrous set. Even getting the ever-cynical New York City crowd to get up and dance, Diawara’s 90 minute set included many songs from her US debut, Fatou. Her talent seemed effortless and the band she led never faltered, making for a majestic night of music for those in attendance.

Photo Gallery: Fanfare Ciocârlia

The celebrated Romanian Gypsy band Fanfare Ciocârlia took the Schimmel Center this past weekend and, as you can see, they had everyone dancing. The hot, heavy and grooving set was a phenomenal welcome back from the band, who played their first NYC set in nearly a decade right on our stage. One set wasn’t enough for the band though, as they ran from the stage to our lobby, playing a handful of songs as the crowd swarmed and buckled with excitement.
